Calbuco volcano

The Llanquihue National Reserve is one of the oldest protected wild areas in Chile. The opening of the Llanquihue National Reserve was arranged in the Los Lagos Region, after it remained closed for three years, following the eruption of the Calbuco volcano in 2015. Today it has changed its landscape but it is still a beautiful place to Take walks and contemplate nature in all its splendor.

We drive toward Llanquihue National Reserve (33,972 hectares), and an encounter with the great Calbuco Volcano and the temperate rainforest. This National Reserve is part of the Temperate Rainforests of the Austral Andes, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2007.
We start our walk by a beautiful forest where we identify the native species, including the Alerce, an evergreen tree that reaches a height of 45 meters and whose diameter can exceed 4 meters wide. We also have opportunity to see, hear, and identify birds such as the black woodpecker, the Huet-Huet, Kingfisher, the Peuco, the Tiuque, the Upland and Torcaza.
After approximately 4 hours of walking (8 km.), we arrive at an old shelter at the foot of the Calbuco Volcano. The current geological formation has been shaped by a succession of tectonic and glacial processes that highlights the Calbuco Volcano cone which has a height of 2,015 meters.
